DC's Batgirl Might Not Be Played By A Big Star, Director States

Last month it was announced that director Joss Whedon will be helming a Batgirl movie for DC. Now Whedon has been speaking about the project, and has revealed that he doesn’t expect a big star to play the title role.

In an interview with Variety, Whedon stated that he wasn’t thinking about casting for now. “I feel like I’m creating this character, I’m going to dialogue with her, and then we’ll see who joins that later on,” he said

“I doubt it will be a name. This is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl and then you cast her”.

The director explained that although he wouldn’t avoid a star, it wasn’t his main focus. “I’m not against movie stars, they’re great, but you need somebody who’s going to be just right,” he said. “And a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight so it’s not as critical.”

Whedon is no stranger to star-studded superhero movies, having helmed The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron for Marvel. He is also known as the creator of TV shows such as Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Agents of SHIELD.

It’s early days for the Batgirl film, and no producers are attached at this point. It will be DC’s second standalone female superhero movie, following the upcoming Wonder Woman, which releases in June. The studio is also at work on a Gotham City Sirens movie focusing on a number of female supervillains.
